Karbon Homes donate £10k to Covid Recovery.

Thanks to a £10k boost in funding, one Durham charity is able to support even more community causes across the region.

County Durham Community Foundation’s Covid-19 Recovery Fund was advanced by £10,000 from Karbon Homes, to support local causes as they adapt the services they offer due to the pandemic.

Practical support

The causes which benefitted include those that provide practical support for isolated and vulnerable people, provide mental health and wellbeing support and ensure communities have access to essentials and food supplies.

Michelle Cooper, from the County Durham Community Foundation, said: “When the pandemic struck, we recognised the devastating impact this was going to have on our communities, and we wanted to help as much as possible.

“We’re incredibly grateful to Karbon Homes for lifting the usual requirements of its funds and redirecting it towards our Covid-19 Response Fund, enabling us to support causes across County Durham, Darlington and Tees Valley that are combating the impact of the pandemic.”

Making the difference

One charity that has benefitted from the Covid-19 Recovery Fund is Leo’s, which supports families through traumatic births. A £5,000 grant from the fund is helping them assist neonatal families with the additional strain caused by the pandemic.

Lottie King, who founded the charity after the death of her son, said: “We had to take everything online. It’s been harrowing for people. We’ve been working with parents who have attempted suicide or are distraught because their baby doesn’t know them and is more connected to the nurses. They’ve also had the added stress of trying to bond with their babies while wearing PPE.”

Long-term support

Karbon Homes has been a long-term supporter of County Durham Community Foundation, holding a named fund that has generated thousands of pounds worth of grants to community causes over the years.

Paul Fiddaman, Group Chief Executive at Karbon Homes said: “As an organisation we aim to shape strong, sustainable places for our communities, which is why we were more than happy to support County Durham Community Foundation’s Covid-19 Response Fund.

“The charities and organisations this fund supports, many of which are run entirely by volunteers, offer a valuable lifeline to so many in our communities, from older residents who are struggling with isolation, to families who are struggling financially.

“We’re proud that with our support, the Foundation can help local causes keep their doors open at a time when their services are needed more than ever.”

Karbon is also offering support to local causes working to reduce the impact of the pandemic through its own Supporting Community Organisations fund.

Local causes can apply for up to £10,000, which may be used to help upskill volunteers or pay for training courses, or to fund asset purchases such as furniture and equipment.
