Community Groups Benefit from Grant Funding

08 June 2011

COMMUNITY groups and individuals in Darlington can benefit from grant funding ring-fenced specifically for the Borough.

County Durham Community Foundation is a grant-making charity providing a professional fund management service for companies and individuals across County Durham and Darlington. The Community Foundation manages over 140 charitable funds, many of which are for the sole benefit of groups in Darlington.

Since 1995 the Community Foundation has given nearly 800 grants within Darlington alone, totaling more than £1,840,000. The Darlington & District Samaritans received two of these grants with some of the funding coming from local company Darlington Building Society. These grants have helped the Samaritans to set up an email and a text system, allowing them to reach younger audiences and open up their services to those who cannot use a telephone. These projects were so successful they are now being rolled out nationally by the Samaritans. The Darlington & District Samaritans were also presented with an Outstanding Achievement Award by the Community Foundation in October last year in recognition of their hard work and success.

Darlington Building Society set up their endowment fund in 1997 in order to create a lasting fund for the benefit of community projects in Darlington. County Durham Community Foundation manages the application process, setting aside applications suitable to the criteria set by the Building Society. The company then decides which applications they would like to fund by means of an employee panel. The Community Foundation manages funds on behalf of many other companies in Darlington including Sherwoods, Marchday and BHP Law, all of which have their own bespoke criteria in line with the aims of their organisation.

Anyone who wishes to apply for a grant from County Durham Community Foundation can view the guidelines and fill in an application form at www.cdcf.org.uk, or alternatively call the office on 0191 378 6340.
