Charity donates relief to elderly

09 February 2011

PACKS containing items to help combat cold weather have been distributed.

One hundred packs, given out at Darlington’s Crown Street library by staff from Age UK Darlington, are part of the charity’s Warmer this Winter project.

The packs contained a fleece blanket, thermal socks, hot water bottles and a keep warm advice card.

Funding for the packs came from a grant of £1,492.60 from the County Durham Community Foundation’s Winter Relief Appeal.

At the library on Monday, 60 packs were given out to elderly people, with others being given out by Age UK.

Anna Mencel, for the charity, said: “Distributing the packs went really well.

“A lot of elderly people have been saying how cold it has been and so, hopefully, the packs will help them.”

The Winter Relief Appeal was set up with the support of The Northern Echo, and encourages people who are entitled to receive the winter fuel allowance, but do not need it, to donate it to the foundation and help people less fortunate than themselves.
