An awards night giving regional business a chance to show their fun side has raised thousands of pounds for charity.

The Alternative Business Awards was held at St James' Park last Friday and raised over £16,000 for The Percy Hedley Foundation to support its work with disabled children and adults in the region.

The main award on the night, The Alternative Business Person of the Year, went to Barbara Gubbins CBE, Chief Executive of County Durham Community Foundation.

Other winners included former Journal business journalist Brian Nicholls, Beamish Museum director Richard Evans and broadcasters BBC Newcastle and ITV Tyne Tees.

The event, which was hosted by BBC breakfast radio team Alfie Joey and Anna Foster, follows a different theme each year, this time taking a Victorian theme to tie in with venue hosts Newcastle United's 125th anniversary.
