Meet the board

Michele Armstrong

Trustee

Michele is Head of Volunteering at Auckland Castle Trust, developing and implementing volunteering across the whole of the trust, helping to ensure Auckland Castle remains a world class attraction and regenerating the local area. Michele was previously Partnerships Manager at Groundwork NE & Cumbria and Chief Executive Officer of 2D. Prior to that she worked for NACRO as a placement manager, but started her working life with Marks and Spencer through their management training programme. She resides in County Durham with her daughter.

Duncan Barrie

Trustee

Duncan Barrie is an experienced commercial Finance Director and chartered accountant. He currently holds the position of Group Finance Director with Biosignatures Limited, a Newcastle based diagnostic company. Previously Duncan was the Managing Director of Nonlinear Dynamics Limited, a world renowned life science software company, which was sold to Waters Inc. in 2013. Duncan is married and lives in Durham with his two young children.

Trustee - Vice Chair

Paul Chandler is an experienced Chief Executive and Non-Executive Director and has been a Member Nominated Director on the board of the Co-op Group since 2015. He is Chair of the William Leech Foundation and of Durham Cathedral Council, a director of Shared Interest and a trustee of Bible Society. Paul is also a Fellow and member of Governing Body of St Chad's College in Durham University. Until 2013, Paul was Chief Executive of the pioneering fair trade organisation, Traidcraft.

Trustee

Peter has previously had a career in international logistics, specialising in chemicals. He has broad knowledge of commercial practice, including construction. Long term involvement in several charitable institutions including an educational trust and listed church restoration. Voluntary service in the Lieutenancy and as High Sheriff in 2003 and has been Involved with CDCF since 1995 as a donor and a previous term as a trustee until 2010.

Trustee

Annie and her husband have lived in Teesdale for the past 17 years. Her main career was 32 years in HM Revenue & Customs (formerly Inland Revenue) in various locations throughout the country where she was originally a Tax Inspector and in her final 15 years worked in a variety of roles at regional and national level. As Deputy Change Director she received the OBE in 2002 in recognition of services to the Inland Revenue. More recently she was Lay Chair of NHS Durham Dales, Easington and Sedgefield Clinical Commissioning Group (DDES CCG) Governing Body for 3 years from its inception in August 2012. She continues to work part time under contract to NHS England as a panel hearing Chair and committee member. In her spare time she tries to keep her large garden under control and grows a lot of vegetables. She now has 4 greenhouses.

Lesley Anne Fairclough has worked at Ward Hadaway for 25 years, becoming a Partner in 1999. Since qualifying as a solicitor in 1992, Lesley has worked in the Commercial Property team at Ward Hadaway dealing with all aspects of commercial property work, but in particular development work (residential, commercial and mixed use schemes) acting for both landowner and developer. Lesley has over 25 years’ experience in development work and specialises in commercial and residential development including joint venture and regeneration projects and has co-ordinated several complex site assembly transactions. She also acts in complex site disposals for clients, whether by option or outright sale or lease, many involving complex overage arrangements.

James has worked for Rothschild & Co, one of the world’s largest independent advisory groups, for over 30 years. He has spent most of his career as an Investment Banker advising companies on a wide range of corporate finance transactions both in the UK and internationally and, since 2008, he has assisted with the development of the bank's wealth management business. James was High Sheriff of Co Durham in 2015/16 and is currently a Trustee of Lord Crewe's Charity. James’ family have farmed in Weardale for many generations and he continues to live there with his wife, Kate, and their three children.

Colin was born in Larkhall, Scotland in 1967 and having declined the temptation to follow 4 previous generations of the “Dundas Fyfe clan” into life as a Funeral Undertaker joined Clydesdale Bank (part of National Australia Group). Colin worked for National Australia Bank Group for 29 years across many different areas of the business, in the UK and Australia. Colin is continually focused on the development of staff, as our most important assets and is committed to providing opportunities to help them grow. This also expands into his involvement with a number of charitable and social organisations as a board member or mentor. In April 2014 Colin was appointed as Chief Executive of Darlington Building Society and is leading the Society towards its next chapter titled Building for the Future.

Stephen Hall

Trustee

Stephen Hall is office senior partner for Deloitte in Newcastle. Stephen is a Chartered Tax Advisor and specialises in advising owner managed business‎ and their shareholders. He leads the Deloitte tax practice in Newcastle and has responsibility for the firm's private client offering in the North East and Yorkshire. Stephen graduated with a history degree from Fitzwilliam College at the University of Cambridge, was born and still lives in Durham City. Interested in all aspects of philanthropy, Stephen has advised charities and other not for profit organisations on structure and tax efficient giving. Twice North East Tax Advisor of the year, Stephen is a member of the current North East Tax Team of the Year ‎as voted by peers in the North East Accountancy Awards and is a member of the Advisory Boards for both 'Invest Newcastle' and the Marie Curie Hospice in Elswick. Stephen has a keen interest in heritage and the arts in particular theatre and cinema.

Ray Hudson

Trustee

Ray Hudson is Deputy Vice Chancellor and Professor of Geography at Durham University. He joined the university in 1972 and has since occupied a variety of posts there, including Head of the Geography Department, Director of the Wolfson Research Institute for Health and Well-being and Pro-Vice Chancellor. In 2014-5 he was Acting Vice Chancellor. He holds the degrees of BA, PhD and DSc from Bristol University, DLitt from Durham, and an honorary DSc from Roskilde University. He has chaired the Conference of Heads of Geography Departments in the UK and served as Vice- President and Chair of the Research Division of the Royal Geographical Society.
